Title: Water Pump Swap
Post by: Darktengu on April 21, 2007, 08:29:12 PM
Here's my How-To on water pumps.

TAKE THEM IN!!!  This thing is a pain.  I got the old one out and the new one in.  But now I have to mess with timing and all that crap.

There is no how to...   ???

Do you have the cam gear tool??  Makes it soo much easier.

I'm close to shooting the car.  I suck at timing and though the car starts it runs ROUGH.  I thought I had the timing perfect too....

And on top of it I heard a nice bang.  So I"m hoping it's not destroyed.  Damn it all.

Dave says..

Always always rotate the crank 4 times and recheck timing marks  before buttoning it up.

bit late though.. everyone else learn from darktengu's mistake ;-)

I rotated it Three times.  But something I noticed is that if you do the crank, and set that at the marks.  rotate the crank once.  The Camgear marks will be a half rotation off.  But if you rotate the crank again the camgear marks are on.  So I have no clue.

Also the good news is the valves weren't bent.  But something was stopping my intake camshaft from rotating.  I pulled the engine as seen in the General area.  I thought the valves were for sure bent but they're fine.  But I couldn't move the camshaft AT ALL.  either way.  It was stuck.

Motor is pulled apart and going to an Engine Machine shop some time this week (probably Monday)

I don't know that it's the same, but the v6 the engine is only in time every two rotations of the crank, when piston 1 is at tdc.  The marks being off is normal I believe.  If you had the adjustable cam gears....well...you only have to be off by a hair.  :-[ I dunno, I did my water pump and timing.

Good luck with the rest man, at least you have an excuse to push those plans forward.  ;)

Guys..

the cams spin at 1/2 the speed of the crank

so you have to turn the crank 2x for the cams to do one rotation

rotating the crank 4 times guarantees that the timing is good.

The only thing that would stop the cam from turning is bent valves.. or valves hitting a piston.

or valves hitting a piston.

I'm assuming that was my problem, but I'd have to get new gaskets and all that.  So we'll just move forward with the built motor  ;D
