Title: Burning Oil
Post by: Matt on April 17, 2007, 12:55:40 AM
Hi, i recently got a 96 avenger from my uncle and it's burning oil. Can i get some possibilities of the problem and possible prices to fix, thx.

The most likely problem is bad or damaged oil control rings on the pistons.  If that is correct, it is not going to be cheap.

Does it burn at all rpm's, or just high?
How much is it burning?
Did you just add oil, maybe you added too much?

Make sure the smoke is blue, is its another color it's most likely a fuel ratio issue.

If i idle it too long it burns alot of oil, took over a quart coming home from portland about 280 miles.

It took that much?
You didn't tell me that.

yeah, i've put about 1 and 3/4 quarts in since i got back, and today i checked and i'm a half low again.

Again did you check for leaking? It's very common for the head gasket to leak at the left rear corner of the head.Especially if the gasket is original.

tell your uncle to fix it!!

and welcome on ASOG forums Matt aka "nephew"   :P

OK.. it's BURNING OIL like fire.. not leaking.. lots of smoke smells like burning oil, looks like burning oil.. not leaking oil. but thx 4 the tips

Title: Re: Burning Oil
Post by: Darktengu on April 18, 2007, 12:55:03 AM
Bad piston rings, from the former owners beating on it.  My guess anyway.  Time to upgrade the internals.

yeah, that's what nykon says, now i just gotta wait till i get some $$$ from my other car  >:(

You could bad valve seats on the exhuast valves and start leaking into the exhuast cambers after it been running for a while. Or bad oil rings.

Title: Re: Burning Oil
Post by: Matt on April 18, 2007, 03:54:01 AM
possibly

Title: Re: Burning Oil
Post by: Nykon on April 18, 2007, 03:55:07 AM
I am guessing bad valve seats, because it is having problems starting.
We will do a compression check soon.

Post by: Ivan on April 18, 2007, 04:21:55 AM
ah that reminded me, i wanted to do my compression check a looooooong time ago and totally forgot about it!

Ok. I probably have bad valve seals. When you say it smokes, is it like the smoke that comes off your engine when you spill a little oil on it and the engine burns it off or is it coming out of the tail pipe?

Title: Re: Burning Oil
Post by: Nykon on April 22, 2007, 08:47:02 PM
Tail pipe

Title: Re: Burning Oil
Post by: Matt on April 24, 2007, 04:56:54 AM
yeah, tail pipe i use a funnel  8) i don't spill any

I'm having that problem a little. burning oil  , little bit of a smoke haze ( not all the time ) , but something that has freaked me out is if I turn on my A/C and leave my car at idle it starts choking like it is going to die.  :-[ . Also it can start acting like this when I first start to accelerate from a dead stop. seems like it does not want to go. I'm having my cousin look at it. ( I dont know much about cars , but he has exp. under his belt ) later

Title: Re: Burning Oil
Post by: Matt on April 24, 2007, 05:08:38 AM
Right when i start mine up it doesn't burn any oil, once the car warms up and idles it smokes like a mofo though

Title: Re: Burning Oil
Post by: Shiano on April 24, 2007, 06:57:40 AM
my exhaust smoke is visible. the smell of it reminds me of a mid 80's ford truck.

Title: Re: Burning Oil
Post by: Ivan on April 25, 2007, 04:30:58 AM
yeah today for the first time in 2 years i saw a big ass blue smoke cloud behind me when i moved.  what happened was i got stuck on a street intersection 'cause of funeral convoy (for one of the VT girls who was killed... she lived near my college).  i probably sat idling for about 15mins and then when i finally started to move i pressed on my pedal pretty good (almost floored), cause i had to make  a turn... i looked at my driver's side mirror and saw that big blue cloud...... i was shocked my car did it  :'( :'( :'(

made me feel embarrassed

Throw in a can of engine retsorer and see if that helps any. I have 223K+ miles on my Venge. Use that stuff on every oil change [along with STP and Marvels Mystery oil] and I have never had oil related problems. You could also try running a 20W50 weight oil to help oil consumption. Also, replace the PVC to make sure you aren't sucking oil past that. If that is your Venger in the pictures it looks like it is worth putting a few bucks into anyways. I spent nearly $3K on new heads, timing belt and tranny two years ago and it was worth every penny.

Title: Re: Burning Oil
Post by: Matt on April 25, 2007, 02:25:00 PM
Yes, that would by my avenger and i've thought about running some restorer through it but also thinking about going to synthetic. But, if that doesn't solve the problem then synthetic is too expensive to keep adding. Do i need to change the oil when i add restorer?

Title: Re: Burning Oil
Post by: Shiano on April 25, 2007, 02:32:08 PM
yes. the restorer works with fresh oil. find out where the consumption is coming from and then switch. you will notice a torque increase depending on how well you are in tune with your car.

Title: Re: Burning Oil
Post by: Ivan on April 26, 2007, 03:32:46 AM
don't use synthetic oil, 1st your car is too damn old for it (too much wear inside) and 2nd its a waste of money for the same results as normal one

Title: Re: Burning Oil
Post by: Nykon on April 26, 2007, 04:55:06 AM
Until we get your oil consumption problem under control I suggest using the high mileage... we will switch ya up to a 10w30 or 10w40 also.

20w50 is too thick.

I run 10 30 and have no problems with it. just bad seals. lol

Title: Re: Burning Oil
Post by: Matt on April 26, 2007, 02:15:51 PM
i'll just keep using the cheap stuff untill i can fix the problem

Title: Re: Burning Oil
Post by: Ivan on April 26, 2007, 05:20:32 PM
HD-30 here and add some Lucas Oil stabilizer to it, it helps A LOT with oil leaking

Title: Re: Burning Oil
Post by: Nykon on April 26, 2007, 05:27:43 PM
Do Not run straight 30 always use a multigrade
Straight weight oil is used for industrial applications.

Title: Re: Burning Oil
Post by: Shiano on April 26, 2007, 10:54:50 PM
Trust us on this Ivan. Nykon and I have had to give up on explaining to the stupid people who ask us why their oil broke down so damn quick and friccaseed their internals.

Title: Re: Burning Oil
Post by: Matt on April 27, 2007, 02:07:06 AM
so i shouldn't be using 10w30?

Title: Re: Burning Oil
Post by: Nykon on April 27, 2007, 05:25:35 AM
no 10w30 is fine.

HD 30 is a Straight thirty weight, meaning that when it is hot it is the same viscosity as when it is cold.

10 w 30 is 10 weight when cold, 30 weight when hot.

Title: Re: Burning Oil
Post by: Matt on April 27, 2007, 02:18:01 PM
ok gotcha... i've been using the cheap $1.98 napa 10w30

Title: Re: Burning Oil

yea.. stick to that

Just my .02:  Avoid leak-stopper stuff at all costs.  That stuff is meant to coagulate, and coagulate it does...

aye, the only reason i ran (got some 10w30 High Mile Castrol oil today)HD-30 is because when i told my grandpa i had the leaking oil problem, he suggested for me to use the HD30 since its staying the same viscosity at all times and will make less oil leakage.

but i am changing oil in few minutes  :P

Title: Re: Burning Oil
Post by: Enemytoast on April 29, 2007, 05:14:39 AM
friccaseed?  What the heck does that mean?

Title: Re: Burning Oil
Post by: Matt on April 30, 2007, 11:58:12 PM
yesterday i pulled the plugs to gap/check them and plug #4 was covered in oil but the rest were burning clean. there was oil on the threads too.. please let me know what you all think.

Title: Re: Burning Oil
Post by: Darktengu on May 01, 2007, 12:35:04 PM
I think you were given someone else's problem!!

It sounds like a bad ring set.  Possibly bad valve seals.  I'm guessing those have never been replaced.  But you can get some help from 4 hours away, and pull the head off, change the valve seals and while the heads off push the pistons up and out of the block and redo the rings!  It'll take a weekend, if you're good a timing, if not, who knows.

Thats kinda my plan... when he gets the money.  The car does have over 200k on it.   ;D

We will get it hooked up.  I may just bring a new head with me... gotta talk to the Father in law and see what I can hook up.

not too terribly bad as far as heads go. $300-400ish Nykon?

My father in law rebuilds them for a living, I have to talk to him first.
Not sure.

For only that I don't think it should be TO much.  If its only a top-end rebuild I wouldn't worry.

Oh, I'll do it if Nykon teaches how do make your myspace background change while behind the frames.  ;)
