Title: painting calipers/drums!!
Post by: Rob Brown on April 08, 2007, 03:26:13 AM
hey was wondering how and what you guys use to plaint you're calipers and drums on your car's??? cuz im getting the new rims and tires put on soon, and wanna paint them so there isnt this ugly crusty calipers/drums sticking through em LOL

was it the caliper paint or just the high heat paint???

also did u take the caliper's off ? and then put em back on and bleed em ? or did u just paint them they way they were on the car ??

cuz today i was at canadian tire,  and i saw that they have a caliper paint but it only good for 900deg C and 450deg F   then there was also a high heat paint that was good up to 1200deg C and 600deg F or maybe other way around whichever sounds normal LOL but it was alota cheaper as well....the caliper paint was like 15.99 a can and the high heat paint was only 8.99 or so....

or is there anything else out there that i can use??

and also what colour u guys think would look good on my car ?? it's a 95 avenger and has drums in the rear, and it's the dark forest green colour, i was thinking maybe yellow, or black, or even something close to the green of my car....whatdya's think ?

Those are mine ... done in high heat powdercoating , followed up with an anodized coating ... I removed disassembled them

I'd never paint drums any color other then flat black don't advertise the drums try to hide them ...

high heat paint works well ... silver is always a nice color choice you can paint them body color over the high heat paint

ya ok hmmm.... ya maybe i will use just some trim-clad rust paint on the rear drumes, and the calipers i might get the dupicolour caliper kit that u just brush on, it like 23.99 or so, and take about 24hrs to cure and harden properly,

cuz i dont think i would have enough time to take em all off and what not

for a quick two color remove the two 14mm bolts on the rear of the caliper , then use the silver high heat paint to spray the part of mine that is silver...
Then if you want to spray the tophat of the rotor spray it too ...
For the caliper you can use the brush on caliper paint or spray it too either with silver or another color you choose ... reassemble when it dries

ya i was thinking of taking the caliper's off BUT leaveing the bleeder screw in, and the brake line on it as well, and also removing the pads, and just paint one half at a time maybe, and hang it off the spring outta the way then do the other side once it dry, or something like that

yes pull the pads it looks crappy to paint those ... there is plenty of brake line to move them out of the way ...

ya cool, hopefully the caliper bolts aren't seized in there...lol

Tsss.. Quit showing off Bad Venge... ::).. :P

jk

I paint mine where they sit... I am a master of newspaper covering... lol... I should be doing mine shortly, the weather is finally starting to warm up here. I will take pics just to show how I do it and the turn out... I've done it plenty of times and always turned out well.

I start off with a wire brush depending on how coroded they are, then a quick sand. I use trem-clad Primer and then VHT caliper paint... (that's the paint at Canadian Tire you were talking about). Usually two coats after the primer.

Here's some pics of my old car I did...

I actually paint the pillar behind it silver also... had some silver paint kicking around.

Drums dont look bad when painted in my opinion.

ya the drums dont look too bad either, and i have a few buddies that have painted there caliper's with caliper paint and they never took NOTHING apart didnt mask anything either, they just painted it were they sat and along with the rotor's, and he said that the paint will wear off the rotors eventually LOL...

After the first stop it'll wear off and contaminate the pads ...

ya i think the only thing im gonna do is take out the pads, and tape off the section's i dont want painted.....   and then give the rear drums a coat of paint as well :P   what colour do you guys think would llok gooooood on my car ?? member my car is the forest green colour.... my g/f was thinkin yellow, and i was thinking maybe silver, OR even green but a colour that look's similar to my green on my car...    what you guys think ?

Ghetto??  >:( lol

looks the same.. and lasted more the a year.. works good for me.

Also.. If you want them to stick out.. Yellow will look good.

Silver will also blend nice.

...why dont u just upgrade to rotors in the rear?

i've got forest green too and also will have to paint my calipers and drums when weather gets nicer.  i will go with black color to hide them, i dont like that "show-off wanna-be" colors  :-\

please dont u dare to color them yellow! i think dark green color will be good to blend with body color. if u want red color, just paint front with red, but don't paint the drums... tooo much red looks bad.

or go like i will with black...

just my 2cents   :-[

sorry Gr8witeLxi, it is what it is, lol  :P. it does look the same tho—is why i think it to be somewhat of a waste of time to remove 'em. i just didn't do mine as well as i shoulda and that's why i need to re-do 'em already, is all. i'd go with silver. i just think that'd look nice in contrast to the forest green—yellow might be a bit much, imo. oh yeah, i'm kinda like you Ivan, i don't really care for the "show-off" style either, that's why i went with the same color as my car (metallic blue).

The only none-ghetto way would be like BV. But not all of us are as fortunate as that. sooo.. Tremclad will have to do.  ::)

Off topic.. but speaking of painting.. Im painting my little beater truck.. picked up a gallon of gloss black, and am going to roller it on.  :D

i'm not knocking on the ghetto-fabulousness of the way you did it… i did mine the same way, lol.

off topic response: you need to use some bedliner to paint the beater with. never have to worry about anything then ;). you oughta do some sponge tech and hand painted pinstripes and/or flames lol. that would be hot  8)

I used caliper paint that was a brush on.I removed calipers and used a wire wheel brush on my die grinder to get the rough stuff off, then sprayed them down with brake cleaner.I put 4 thin coats on, letting each coat dry to touch.I painted rear drums black.

Does it make  a difference with or without the dust collectors on or off.. Im painting my calibers and i was thinking about taking the collectors off. Is that a good or bad Idea.

No difference on or off. Just leave em on.
