Title: Resonators
Post by: Shiano on March 30, 2007, 09:24:24 AM
Ok. My future rules for MY threads (gotta start somewhere). By posting you agree to them.

1. Be nice.

Ok now that we have that cleared up...... onto the question.

Our cars (All four versions), are obviously equipped with resonators that are designed to enhance the *ahem* natural sound of the exhaust system. My question is:

If I install two resonators via a Y-pipe side by side, would that deepen the tone or make it sound like a beefier I4?
If not, please elaborate.

the red sections are the resonators

since it seems like your posts are about making your exhaust sound better Ill post what I have as an exhaust setup.
It sounds great, no bees in a can sound.

header of your choice-->catalytic convertor-->18" stainless resonator--> bosal catback exhaust.
It sounds great.

and IMO doing the y into 2 resonators is essentially the same as having 1 resonator twice as long.

Id suggest a single 24" resonator and whatever else you want muffler wise..but loop mufflers/typical import mufflers will sound crappy as they are typically designed to give that import exhaust sound. Which is typically annoying/crappy sounding.

Now with that said there isn't much you can do to a 4cyl motor that will make it sound like a mean v8 sound. but the bosal/resonator combo sounds about as close as you can get.

Id suggest flowmasters/magnaflow mufflers but stay away from apex/other import type brands.

so IMO no need for the y pipe if you put an 18" or 24" single resonator in.

I just ordered my bosal cat back yesterday, is there a recommendation that you have for a Header?  I was thinking bosal for that also but I was also considering Pacesetter.

I think mines one of those crappy eBay headers (previous owner took frugal to a new level). I have a Magnaflow universal (720 cfm i think) for my NEW muffler. I had to toss a fart can that was on there (and there was much rejoicing). Once i get the exhaust leak fixed and cat put back in then the resonator is next. below is the current *cough* setup *cough* until i get some positive cash flow.
It'll be a bit for the sound file. small financial snaffu. anyhoo. changed my oil (finally.. grr. thank you Nykon  8)) and decided i'd snap a few pics while i was under there. this is my exhaust system from downpipe flange to the resonator in this order.

and yes, the u-bolt nuts are WELDED.

Nykon, does Magnaflow make an 18-24" universal resonator? if so what part #'s?

Thanks mcgyvr.

This is what I got
http://www.sfxperformance.com/parts/VIB1793.htm
Just take it to the muffler shop and have them cut and weld it in.
Looks great with the bosal setup

awesome. check that 15037 also. I'm getting qoutes of 86 minimum.

So a bigger resonator will get rid of the rasp that comes at 2200-2400RPM then leaves?

You may have an exhaust leak. if you have a garage or can get the car at least 3 feet off the ground, take a handfull of ashes, flour, or something thats extremely easy to blow away. make sure there is no wind blowing and run your hand ALONG the path of the exhaust pipe WITHOUT touching it. I'm not telling you to burn your hand. that may help you detect it. it's just that most exhaust leaks happen at the flanges or where someone did some welding.

if you look at my first pic of my exhaust, you can see the rusted part and then a small black streak. that is where my exhaust leak is. i could actually feel the air when i put my hand near it. Just be careful.

my cousin just calls it a resonance point, but yea i'll try to look for a leak.

ur cousin could be right about the resonance point aka point of natural frequency. also, as shiano found out...he had a riced muffler...lol not his fault though...he bought it like that. :)

lmao..buying riced cars...what a trip :D

the sound those rice tips make do not compare to the window shattering rasp of a straight pipe, i've been surrounded by 3-4 reving ricesters and my exhaust is the only one you hear.

I'm gonna pickl up a 18" res see if the rasp will die down a little.

EDIT: nvm LOL

Nykon,I'd stay away from the pacesetter.I've read somewhere that they tend to crack and leak over a period of time.I installed a D/C Sports 4-2-1 header  on mine, seems to be good so far.

Yeah, change of plans.  I won't need a header where I am going   ;D

just a suggestion... but i have a 2.75" straight pipe... no cat... no muffler, with a side pipe on drivers side...
sounds amazinggg

there was a guy in one of my classes who had an SRT-4, the thing sounded like a v8, deep, throaty, didnt have a ricerish tone until you got pretty far into the powerband, if i had to guess i'd say like 4-5k, until you could tell it was actually a turbo-4 thundering under that hood.

but on to the point, i asked the guy and he said he was running the stock cat, stock resonators, he just tore off the mufflers. he coulda been BSin, or he may have not known what he was talking about. but i'd say try that shiano, tear off the muffler and see how it sounds, unless you've already done that, then try splitting it to duals, if you already have that ill go hide in my corner, cause im out of ideas

lol. thanks Anson. Nah. trying to stay away from the redneck ricer technology [deleting/removing necessary parts]. I've yet to see a non-turbo L4 that sounded/performed good with duals. I wish, but wish in one hand....

But i'm kinda leaning toward simply buying a full system from the header back and keeping the Cat and Muffler in storage for a rainy day.

Oh, and SRT-4's sound awesome when they aren't broken. lol

well if you take it to a good exhaust shop(note good, not just a dude who welds up exhaust) they could probably tell you how to get the sound you're looking for then you could go from there, they may even be able to make a system for you versus ordering a cat-back kit. although the kit would be cheaper.

lol. if this were my 240, i'd be broke from upgrades [SR20DET for starters].

SRT-4 didn't come with a muffler..  ::) , unless you count the turbo as the muffler.

I don't know how people with srt-4's don't get pulled over all the time. I had no muffler on my daytona turbo and i got pulled over real quick. To me it wasn't even that loud.

oh, so he was full of B.S. got it, still doesnt get rid of the fact that it sounded amazing

I thought you were kidding until I Wikipedia'd it...  I always used to laugh at those things (after all, they're Neons!) but damn, that was a pretty respectable factory offering.  Now why the hell did they never do an SRT version of the Avenger back in the day?  Rat bastards...

don't worry, there will be an SRT version made of my avenger  ;) eventually  :-\
