Title: Programming Keyless Entry!
Post by: Enemytoast on March 01, 2007, 02:49:19 AM
I bough a keyless entry remote from eBay and I was wondering if anyone knew the proper procedure to program it?  I have a '97 Avenger ES with anti-theft.   That is all I can think of that is relevant.  I can tell you anything you need to know though.

It's one of these (in case it is different):

1) Turn ignition to OFF.
2) Locate the Data Link Connector, its a black 16 pin connecter that is under the driver's side dash, right where your right knee would be. You have to look up into the dash from below to see it.
3) Ground pin 1 of the Data Link Connector by taking a wire or paper clip and running it from pin 1 to pin 4. Pin 4 is ground so you can just short pin 1 to 4 and it will be grounded. Grounding pin 1 tells the system you are ready to reprogram it.
4) Close all of your doors.
5) Turn the key to ACC then back off. The power door locks will lock/unlock. This is the signal that the system is ready for reprogramming.
6) Push a button on your key fob, doesn't matter which button.
7) If you have 2 key fobs, then press a button on the 2nd fob within 1 minute of pressing a button on the 1st fob. Both must be programmed at the same time. If you only have 1 fob then press a button 2 more times to signal that you only have one.
Cool The doors will lock/unlock to signal the codes were received.
9) Remove the jumper wire from the data connector.

Thanks a lot Nykon, worked like a charm!  I think I due time a give you some Karma.

and as for the remote having a short range, have you tried changing the battery?

Never checked or tried. lol

What range do you get?

I just got it done earlier today, and I haven't even tried outside the garage :-\.  Next time I have it out I'll see though.

The directions that came with it said to change it though, and I know that is a big factor.

We'll see.

I was serious.

Yeah, that does work. Also.. pressed against any large conductors works. ie: Metal framing on a building. It amplifies the signal.

Ued to have a 400 meter command start and would be able to start my car about 800 meters away using the metal frame window sill in my college. ;)

your skeletal system acts as an antenna....or maybe its just higher off the ground where the waves emitted can travel farther.

If anything, the open mouth has a reverse parabolic effect on the waves.

Just a quickie for everyone (no funny ideas):

Whats the furthest from your car that you can lock/unlock the doors and what system are you using?

Post a pic of your remote too.

The rear view has an automatic tint option for headlights behind the vehicle. So it might cost more then you think.

Hey guys,
I was wondering if it was possible to program a different model of remote to my 98 avenger.  I have the standard p.o.s. key fob that has the panic button on the front, right below the unlock button.  Would like to have a more standard chrysler/dodge remote.  Like the '03 stratus, or almost any of them for that matter.
 Any info would be appreciated.

Yeah, thanks guys.  I found those on ebay right after I posted this. I was hoping it would be possible to program another Chrysler one to it.  But I guess this one would be slightly better.  Thanks though.
