Title: head lights
Post by: Antony on January 28, 2007, 05:48:22 AM
im having trouble getting the head lights out is there a certain reason why or am i just an idiot

Title: Re: head lights
Post by: Patrick on January 29, 2007, 01:22:23 AM
No your no Idiot , IT JUST SUCKS trying to get out. Took me forever ( 30mins ) There is like 3 screws you have to take out. Then it is just you wiggling it out. I used a flat head screw driver to put under the light above the fender. There is a little lip under the headlight that is what makes it so difficult. I have knowen people thought to losen the fuse box and try to wiggle it out that way. Best of luck.

DO NOT TOUCH the fuse box or its cover! again, DO NOT.

The 1st time i got my head lights out, i removed the fuse box cover... and when i was removing 3rd bolt inside the fender, i touched the exposed fuse box.  Guess the consiquence?

Yup, boom! Sparks flew, and my craftman wrench got kinda melted to the fuse box :-/

But yeah, u have to kinda wigle them out, bend the bumper little bit, and just pull! haha, spend some time, you will figure it out.

I never said take the cover off , I said losen as in unbolt it and move it a little and that in itself is not a smart thing to do.

Well me and my friend were about to take the front bumper off completely but it was really cold outside and snowing on the ground so we just semi-hooked everything back together and figured that we will let it be untill it gets nicer outside

You can remove two of the bolts inside the fender and drop the bumper ...
Or remove the three bolts on the fender top and GENTLY pry up on that to work them out

Title: Re: head lights
Post by: Antony on January 29, 2007, 11:15:52 PM
see thats what we tried to do is take off the top 3 bolts but i had to go and i didnt have the time to just sit there and try to pry the head lights out

Post by: Shiano on January 31, 2007, 01:21:11 AM
i dropped my bumper when i took mine out. i was rather proud of myself (first body piece i ever took off and it wasn't already broke) when i was able to put it all back on and couldn't tell it had been removed.  ;D

Yea I got lucky and did not have to take my bumper off. Think I will next time though cause I am sure it is easier.

2000 grit wet/dry sandpaper
water
patience
extremely high quality (NO skimping) clear plastic cleaner AND polish (two seperate bottles. Meguiars. Nykon probably knows the part numbers. I have them on my shelf at my ....... shop)

Wetsand the lenses in circular motions, Daniel-san.
Rinse regularly and re-apply sandpaper (keep surface wet).
Do not let water get inside.
When desired smoothness and clearness is acheived, use Clear Plastic Cleaner. Mequiars # wtf ever.
Next apply Clear Plastic Polish. Mequiars # wtf ever also. Different # though. Just also wtf ever. lol.
Admire a job well done.
Take $100 you saved and spend on better stuff. Like sushi.

That's exactly the info i was looking for.. cuz the only shiot they had around here was 600 grit (small shiot a$$ town) and i wet sanded with it.. and was like  >:( WTF! gotta use higher.... I knew I heard to use higher grit (1500 around).. so... in conclusion 2000 will make it nicely finished?.. then add the clear coat?.. cuz i have that to ( intended on using it).

Title: Re: head lights
Post by: Shiano on March 13, 2007, 07:51:36 AM
2000 yess. like i said though. patience. this may take a bit and buy SEVERAL sheets. mark down how many you used on the first light and use that many on the second.

Hey Nykon, Napa sells individual squares right? 3M? Napa in canada? part number in case they have to order?

Sorry but this could be a disturbing photo to some of you....

The dreaded 600 grit... I need to get more with higher grit.. I'll have the whole process posted up later.

with the 600 grit, clear coat  COULD work, I believe it would just be a filler basically. anyway, im not really sure if u would need the clear coat if u use 2000 grit.

Title: Re: head lights
Post by: Gr8witeLxi on March 14, 2007, 12:04:15 AM
You basically need a clear coat no matter what grit you use. I got my hands on some 1500.. wet sanded some more.. and it was still foggy from the sanding. the clearcoat is like a good filler.. like you said JBI... Its looking alot better though now....

Title: Re: head lights
Post by: Nykon on March 15, 2007, 02:25:46 PM
If you use 2000 grit you should be able to buff it out to a polished finish, no need for clear coat.
Polishing compound after the 2000 grit.  No clear.

Title: Re: head lights
Post by: JusBringIt on March 15, 2007, 04:21:55 PM
...or grease from nykon's hair after a day at work-polishing compound is overrated...is that how u do ur oil changes?? lol j/k

that's what I thought tho. either way, i used the clear coat after 600 grit and it looked ok. there's always more than one way to do the same thing.

Title: Re: head lights
Post by: Gr8witeLxi on March 15, 2007, 06:25:46 PM
That is what I intend on doing.. I have to sand the clear coat off now though.

Before you destroy your car. The headlights are easy to remove and install. remove the screws holding the fenders in place. Move the fenders out just a bit and wiggle the headlights past them. It takes less than 30 minutes and is a snap to do.
