I've got a 97 avenger es w/ a 2.0 5 spd. its a great car, but when its cold out the throwout bearing makes an awful racket.  once it warms up quiet and shifts smooth. could it be the slave cylinder? or should i just replace throwout bearing? has anyone else ever heard of this?  any suggestions are appreciated.  I only recently purchased this vehicle (about 5 months ago) but so far no major problems, just had to replace tie rod ends and get an alignment.

I've never heard of this.  Is it noisy through the whole RPM range or only a certain spot.  If they recently replaced the clutch and didn't break it in properly you'll have the noise until it's broken in properly.  As for being affected by temp the only thing I can think of is the bearing grease inside the Throw-out is gelling up.

it only does it when its cold.  when i start the car and let it warm up it rattles in neutral, when i push the clutch in its quiet.   then after about 5 mins its like brand new nice and quiet.  I think you maybe right about the grease.  Thanks for responding so fast!

actually..

it's the oil slinger inside of the input shaft of the tranny..

not the throwout bearing.. 

changing the tranny fluid might help..  but after a few thousand miles (50K+) or so.. the slinger wears enough that it rattles until the fluid gets up on it.

it's annoying..  but nothing is really wrong.
