95 avenger - Timing belt replacement problem. Help.
« on: March 03, 2006, 01:16:49 AM »

Hey guys, I am new to here and a noob with Avenger mechanics.

My problem is that I can't take the crank shaft pulley off to change the timing belt.

After following manual book that I have, I got stuck - I can't take it off.  3-jaw pulleys that I have tried to use are too big, the thread of the main shaft is like 1/16inch bigger than the thread in the pulley   Sad

What to do?

Please help

I rent a pulley from AutoZone when I do timing crap.  The one they have is perfect.  I'm not sure how you're using it, but you undo the center bolt on the crank dampener, just about a half inch.  Then put the claws on the inside of the dampener and the rotating piece on the bolt of the dampener.  then tighten.  The Dampener will come off as far as the bolt.  Then you loosen the bolt another half inch and repeat.  Just do that until the dampener is loose enough to pull off.

Oh! Well that makes sense now.  No one showed me how to use the 3-law and how to mount it, I didnt use it when I replaced timing belt on 89 Chrysler LeBaron.

I took the bolt out...  hah.

Thanks a lot Darktengu, I ll try your method tomorrow.

Yeah if there's no bolt that'll make it a bit tougher.  Hopefully tomorrow goes well!

When I do mine, I use a socket head cap bolt (one that takes an allen wrench) and put two small nuts inside the head of the bolt.  Get your puller snug enough to hold its self and put a pair of vise grips on the bolt head.  Using this type of bolt keeps everything perfectly centered to pull it off straight.  I don't think you'll get by with less than a 5 ton puller.  The first time I took mine off, I smoothed the treads on 3 brand new 5-ton pullers.  They can be pretty tight sometimes.

Dj, i used your method and got the pulley off (had to drop the engine to remove it)

Now i am stuck at removing the pastick cover and engine mount (not body mount).  The 3 bolts that are attach the engine mount with cover to the engine are too long and cant be removed (atleast i cant remove em).  1 out of 3 bolts are removed, but the other 2 are stuck because of the body frame.

Any suggestions on what to do?  Huh

Your picture didn't show.  What you have to do is jack the engine up.  Use a board over the oil pan and start jacking.  It will still be tight it's a real bitch, but that's what I had to do.  It'll be nice when I have a engine hoist and I can just pull the whole damn motor out.

hah yeah, get the engine out and rebuild it would be nice  Grin

i did jack it up using a 2.5 ton jack and a flat wood board under the oil pan... but how high can the engine go up? i raised it and thats where i am stuck at... looks like to get those bolts out, I need to tilt the entire engine in 30degree angle

i am so frustrated... every time i finally move on, something else pops out and its so ridiculous!

Yeah it's a pain and it's just as much of one to get it back in.  once you do it a couple (17) times it starts to get easier.  If you have a hoist or can get a hold of one, it would make your life MUCH easier.

Oh well... tired it, almost got 2nd bolt out, spent 3 hours doing it... then i just said "F*** this."  Got the engine mounts back on (oh yah, removed bottom engine mount so i could lift the engine up with 2 jacks) and just gonna get it towed to a shop.  I talked to them, explained my problem, said that i got all parts, they said its not a problem.  It should take em about 1 day to fix it....

so pissed off, cause that would've saved me like 700-800$  Angry Angry Angry

Thanks for all the info though Smiley

Yeah that certainly blows.  If only you lived closer, I'd stop by and help you out.  Hopefully they don't kill you on price.
