This is my first post, and it's kinda long, but I'm at the end of my rope.
My 1995 Avenger 2.0L 5-spd has been running like crap over the past few years, and no one seems to be able to fix it. The car has 74,000 miles on it, and I'm the original owner.
And now, my story. The car seems to "skip" or "miss" occaisionally, or maybe a hesitation, more noticably when cold and under hard acceleration (like merging onto an Interstate). It doesn't seem to idle poorly though. In Nov. 2003, I took it to a local repair shop, and they cleaned the fuel injectors, and reccommended a tune up. The injection cleaning didn't help, and neither did the Champion OEM plugs and AutoZone plug wires I installed. In June 2004, I took it to the local Chrysler dealer beacuse the check engine light was on. They changed the EGR valve, a "Coil pack #3," and also cleaned the injectors. No change, car still ran poorly. Last week, the check enginge light came on again, so I took it back to the first service center, and they changed the coil, plugs and wires with Chrysler parts as reccommended by a couple of TSB's they found. $700 bucks later, the car STILL RUNS LIKE CRAP!! CAN"T ANYONE FIX A CAR??? BTW, the check engine light is off, but when I turn the key on-off, I still get a "43" error code, random cylinder misfire.
Also, my cruise control only works sometimes. I see there's a TSB about that. Could the two problems be related? The repair shop didn't think so when I mentioned it to them, but hell who knows? I just don't have any confidence in ANY repair shop at this point.
Sorry for the long post, but I just want my car to run right. I bought the car in April 1995, and haven't had any other problems with it. I love the car otherwise, it gets great mileage, and it's paid for!
I truly appreciate any help you can provide. Thanks!!
That's the short list, you already took care of getting new plugs and wires, you said you cleaned the injectors, you could try replacing them. Get your timing checked. And if you have to hunt eBay for an ECU.

Mod List. Um WAY too many to fit on here. But the engine can handle about 800HP
The 420a has a coil pack instead of the traditional distributor. It receives a signal from the computer and sends electrical current to the plug wires and then to the sparkplugs. It's that black box sitting on top of your valve cover with the plug wires coming out of it.

Yes, misfiring and no cruise control could DEFINITELY be related. Cruise control works by using vacuume, and if one of the vacuume lines is cracked or fell off, it would cause a leak that could result in missing and sputtering as well as no cruise control....
Hi Danno, I had much the same problem as you with my 95 veng 2.0 5spd. Mine would skip/miss and got progressively worse as time went on. I took it in a few times and tried some things myself and it never got much better. Turned out to be the ECU or brain unit for the car. There is a service bulletin on the ecu but that is only for a invalid code that shows up I believe. I drove it like that until one day the car would not start at all. No engine light came on when I turned the key and it would just dead crank like there was no spark. Put a refurb ecu in it (about $260 I think) and she started right up and ran like a champ.
Unfortunately it took me until the car died to decide what the problem was. If you plan on keeping the car for awhile it might be worth grabbing another ECU anyway. If it works then you're all set. If not then at least you got a spare for when it does decide to go out. I know there was another guy here who had to replace his three times /shrug.
