Need help with 420a
« on: March 14, 2006, 02:42:26 PM »

Hey guys, love the new look of the website... took me a day to realize the username was now case sensitive Tongue

in any event.

I have a 96 Dodge Avenger with the 420a engine ....

When i bought it, it had an important oil pan leak... and the guy failed to inform me ... so the engine starved within hours after i got it.... and i spun a crank bearing. sending shrapnel through the pan, completely destroying the bearing journal and twisting the crank...

So the engine is out now and this is my summer project car.

Meanwhile, i have a 98 avenger with the 420a that has a clicking / ticking sound when cold. (canada weather sucks)
i'm getting really paranoid and want to know if this can be the early tell tell signs of a failing crank bearing.

I think I may have seen a TSB about that ticking noise.  I will look into it and post back a little later.

The ticking soud you hear is/are lifters in the engine. I had the same problem with my 1994 Eclipse before it blew. What you are hearing is the engine not getting enough oil. While my eclipse lasted almost two years with the noise, I recemend you getting that fixed.
