Okay, I just bought a 95 Avenger with 161,000 miles on it. The car runs really well, but I have had a few occurances where I was idling at a light and the car would start sputtering and then die. As soon as I start moving again, it is fine. I have searched the forums and it sounds like I need to replace the crankshaft position sensor. I haven't done the key dance yet, but will as soon as I get time. Is there anything else I should check? Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Problem at idle = Idle Control?? that's my guess. Pick up a new Idle air control (IAC) sensor. That would be my first move. Actually since you just bought it I would buy new plugs and wires, change the oil and all that good tune up stuff. Then if you still have the problem I'd go with IAC. You have a check engine light on? You can do a key dance and figure out the codes your car is giving off.
Fuel filter is 25 bucks and pump is probably expensive. If it was that, it would be worse at higher rpms as the same rail pressure needs to be maintained. Go with what DT says. You can also adjust the idle if need be by loosening the two screws holding the cable in place and moving the plate back and forth as you need.
Also, don't rule out the fuel pump relays. They are under the hood near the firewall on the right side of the engine bay. My old 'Bring had that same issue.
silly question, IAC sensor, Is that the same as the Ambient Temp sensor. I cant seem to find an IAC. I have the same issue runs great when it is cold, after warm up it starts to spit and sputter on take off, once it catches on, it puts me back in the seat. Then when I am up to speed and I start to coast it seems to miss.
Ok I found one,(IAT sensor) put it on and I am doing alot better now. Idles smooth even at a stoplight in drive. still just a little stumble when i take off from the light, I am going to find out what you people use to clean the intake, I know it's something with foam in the name.
You could use a can of Mopar's Combustion Chamber Cleaner. It's an aerosol can.
You can follow the directions on the back, or you can do it the way that 2 chrysler techs told me to do it.
Tech method: Engine off, empty the can into the intake manifold with the TB WOT. You'll have to hold it while you do this, so make sure you have something to keep it open with. TRY to start the car a couple of times. Basically, you won't be able to. this is normal. Let set for about 4 hours. Come back out and crank the car. it will act like it doesn't want to but you'll have to keep on the throttle to make sure it stays running. run at about 2500-3500 for about 5 minutes or until all the black smoke [carbon] has evacuated your system. this will also probably restore some compression if you've significantly lost any. Afterward, wash your car's bumper.
a couple of tips:
Do this on a day you have nothing to do. Point your cars exhaust away from anything important. you don't want to get carbon on said importance.
The can cost's anywhere between 12-20 depending on your local Mitsu/Chrysler dealer parts department
