i am planning on doing my interior in the winter-but have never tried anything like this before---Any tips or hints would be great!.Like what to do for prep ?(light sanding,primer,etc.).thanks for your help
strip your car interior....put the screws back in after you remove whatever item you are doing that way they are in place when you put them back AND you don't have to figure out which screw goes where. You're other alternative would be buy some sandwich bags and put all the screws from certain pieces in the bag and mark the bag very specifically.
If you are going to paint your doors and dash, you can't because of the vinyl. You can either SEM like I did or Fiberglass and bondo them. We were under time constraints so I just SEM'd it.
I invested in a little random orbital sander for like 40 bucks. Then I bought some 80 grit sandpaper. Some 80 grit for the sander and then some additional sheets for hand sanding in those hard to get areas. I would use the orbital to cut labor time significantly. Basically sand the excrement out of everything til' its knocked down really good and scuffed up.
May want to take the time to fiberglass and cracked or broke pieces, I had 2 pieces that needed small patch work, you can't tell now though.
Wipe everything down with a paint prep solution and then spray with a high build primer. Spaying primer is not very hard. I would spray real heavy so you don't sand through real easy.
After spraying primer use a real fine grit sand paper to smooth the primer. On some pieces you may have to reprimer and spray depending on if you sand through to the plastic again.
