HELP! Harmonic balancer siezed to crankshaft sprocket!
« on: March 21, 2007, 10:23:43 PM »

I'm replacing my timing belt/water pump and I'm at the stage of removing the harmonic balancer. First off chrysler is idiotic in that they didn't bother to thread the holes in the harmonic balancer to allow you to use a standard harmonic balancer tool. So I'm using a 6" powerbuilt 3 arm gear puller of which I can only use TWO of the arms because the position of the frame rail is JUST too low to use all three arms- so I have both arms at a 180* angle. I broke loose the center bolt using the starter trick and loosened the bolt about 5 turns. I attached the puller and when I got to the end I looked underneath to inspect- and the crankshaft sprocket was coming out with the harmonic balancer! How the hell is that possible? The threads of the center bolt are inside of the sprocket I thought, and i thought the purpose of the bolt is to hold the sprocket back while the balancer is pulled out using a puller. What am I doing wrong?

when I changed mine, I had to buy a new crankshaft sprocket and get a new pulley from a junkyard.   You can try LOTS of pb-blaster, wd-40, rust-buster, etc.   If that won't work, heat the pulley up with a blowtorch.

Otherwise, a new sprocket will be about 55 bucks at the dealership, the pulley should be around 40 at the junkyard.

Let me know how it works out!

alright that might just be what I have to do- so how did you get both peices out? I can only pull them out so far until I run out of room on the center bolt for the puller

You have to back the bolt out a little, put the puller back on, and so on.  Also, if you need a reference for this, I did a write up on it.  I'll post a link later.

but the timing belt is still tensioned on the crankshaft sprocket- if I pull the sprocket all the way out won't it release and then turn my cams? And yeah I'm actually doing this follow the proceedure on your writeup- however it of course didn't have anything in there about a seized camshaft sprocket!  Shocked
