Mechanical Shifter Problems on 96 Sebring
« on: July 15, 2006, 03:56:30 PM »

My shifter seems to have too much play in it and I am not sure how to go about fixing it.  For example, if I have the shifter in Drive I can actually pull back enough on it that it will drop into second without pressing the button on the shifter.  It does stop if I don't press the button but obviously doesn't stop the shifter where it is supposed to.  If I put the shifter into 1st gear I can actually pull it back far enough that it seems to make the tranny mad where its not sure what gear to be in.  I obviously don't shift into first often but I know this is not something it should normally do.  Sometimes when I am driving it seems to be halfway between second and third (while the knob is in drive) so I just nudge the shifter up slightly (towards neutral) and it then seems to drive a little more smooth like it is fully into third gear.  I am not sure if this has any connection to my previous post about my car not wanting to shift out of second sometimes.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Joe

haven't had any experience with that problem, but like you said probably just a physical problem with the shifter linkage.
some things to check here..
