95 Avenger wont run or start
« on: May 27, 2006, 06:37:49 PM »

I have a 95 Avenger with 2.0L 5 speed. Over the past 2 years, it has started cutting out when driving. The RPMS drop and it just quits. Sometimes it restarts, sometimes not. I have had 2 PCMs put it - that is always the solution from my mechanic and the dealer. Now its sitting in the driveway - won't run at all. Sometimes it fires up for a few seconds then dies. The fuel pressure checked OK, the battery is good, the terminals are clean. When I turn the ignition on, it is totally dead. No check engine lights or anything. It has 138,000 miles. The only major work has been a new clutch, radiator and I've replaced the head gaskets twice due to an oil leak problem., which is solved. The spark plugs are about 1 year old, it has always had regular oil changes.

Could be ignition switch, or a main fuse...  Other than that I would suggest the battery or terminals but you say they are good.

Yes, I would go with the fuse thing nykon mentioned. It is def. something electrical since nothing is coming from turning the key. Check your starter cuz if that's not working you wont get any lights either. I helped some guy fixed his car ..his starter was broken and he couldnt get any turn overs or anything. this may have been the problem w/ ur rpms just dropping. Something was progressively corroding,  so check main fuse, wires, then starter. it may be corroded down there..good luck.

Nykon knows these cars, since he gets to sit and read about them all day for work!

But he forgot to mention getting the PCM flashed.  Just because you're getting a new one doesn't mean it has the updates.  And your car is a 95, and if they keep using 95s to replace it, those DON"T have the updates.

And Relays, I always forget to say check your relays.

Mod List.  Um WAY too many to fit on here.  But the engine can handle about 800HP

Thanks  -will check starter and ignition. But wouldn't the dealer "flash" the PCM? I guess Monday I'll call the service dept. and find out.

I have learned the dealers like to do a half assed job so they can get you in later for stuff they should have done the first time.  The dealer is not your friend.  Working in the industry I see a lot of people get screwed by dealers.  Anything they can do to get more money or save the money they have, they will do.

DT, nice catch on the reflash.

A couple more questions... have you tried to jump it?  Did the lights come on and then when you turned the key did everything go off and then not come back on anymore?  Have you checked the connections farther down on your negative battery terminal, like where it connects to the body and the block?
