95 avenger problems..what wrong
« on: May 08, 2006, 07:24:28 PM »

i have a 95 avenger es that has been driving funny lately.  When i stop at a light the transmission will shift really hard and then keep shifting or racing while i am stopped.  Also, sometimes the engine idles really rough when i stop and then when i try to accelerate and go the car barely moves and it seems like something is stuck or clogged.

sometimes i get this really bad smell and the engine light goes on... and my transmission fluid is bubbly...what could this mean??  so many problems!!!

You have the auto transmission so that's the first place I'd look the A604 is a problematic tranny.  But I'd check the fuel filter, it's cheap and easy.

Mod List.  Um WAY too many to fit on here.  But the engine can handle about 800HP

Pull a code the next time your light comes on, then we'll have a starting point. Bubbles means that you are over due for a fluid change. Have the tranny flushed and filter changed.

Good luck

So I guess being late, all your suggestions are already posted by someone else...*sigh....oh wait! check your oil!!..umm may not help but...I dunno, this guy had a problem and some other guy was like..check your oil..that's the best place to start..well cuz it's cheapest...but sounds like your fuel filter cant breathe. if that doesnt work..which I highly doubt will happen..check your fuel injectors....just in case..ya never know..then again I never heard of something like that causeing such a problem..but just so I'm not just copying what everyone else  says

what do you mean by the transmission racing at a stop? revving erratically? does it idle like crap all the time? you may have more than one problem. like dave said the trans bubbles aren't good. what color is the fluid?
the bad smell could be due to a plugged cat. bad idle could be due to anything from the egr to idle air controller etc.

when i am at a stoplight the transmission shift every few seconds and the car tries to go.  my throttle body was cleaned about a month ago because they said it was really bad and since then this has been happening.  i dont know if that was the cause but it did start then.  for as long as i sit at the stop, the transmission will continue to shift every few seconds making a funny noise, unless i put it into neutral.

so when you put it in neutral...nothing happens?no revving?  if that's the case, then of course, your transmission, but since the car wants to move, I'd say it has to do with your car getting gas even when your not applying it, check ur throttle body to see if anything was faultily replaced causing it to seem as if your giving it gas. There MAY be something lodged in it preventing the throttle body from going back to being fully closed. That seems to be the problem since your car WANTS to go.

Have you got a CEL code yet? I'm wondering if your transaxle range switch might be the causeof your tranny issues.

the bad smell could be due to a plugged cat. bad idle could be due to anything from the egr to idle air controller etc.

I was thinking clogged converter as well, maybe O2 sensors  Undecided

no..i havent gotten the CEL code yet..but..another thing (lol) my engine idles really high...probably around 2000rpm's until i put it into gear when it goes down around 1250..so im starting to think it was something they did to the throttle body?

When the throttle body was cleaned, what was used to clean it? Also, did that person make sure not to spray the idle air control sensor? That could cause trouble with the idle. Also check the throttle position sensor (easy to do).

As for the bad smell, does it happen to smell like sulfur (rotten eggs)? If so, that usually means an O2 sensor is bad.

Keep us posted!
