LED lights and switch...
« on: April 27, 2006, 04:03:28 PM »

I bought a set of LED lights. (not a under car kit, just lights.) i want to wrire them up so when i open my door, they turn on, and when i shut it, they go off. but i also want them wired into a switch so when the door is shut, i can turn the switch on to turn the lights on. we've tried to wire them up that way, but we've come to the problem of them not coming on and turning off with the door open and shut. the switch was the easy part, we can't get them to turn on when we open the door.

please HELP!!!

Have you tried wiring them into the courtesy lights?

ok, and a new problem has come up. when we were trying to wire them up. something broke. my dome (map) lights won't come on now when the door i open. the switches for the lights will turn them on. and the switch is turned to "door," but they still will not come on. i don't know what the problem is.

I believe you blew the fuse since you connected your wires in parallel. That increased the amperage causing a fuse overload. It will not work unless you apply resistors to you wires which involves a whole lot of calculations...which I can do if I can ge all the info. I just need the amp rating for the lights and I will tell you what to do...unless of course Im completely wrong and you didnt blow a fuse. Grin

blew ALOT of fuses. the same on over and over over and over over and over over and over over and over over and over over and over over and over over and over over and over over and over over and over over and over over and over over and over over and over over and over over and over over and over over and over over and over over and over over and over over and over over and over over and over over and over over and over over and over over and over over and over over and over over and over again. but thats not the reason my dome lights don't come on.

check your DOOR switch at the bottom, it may not be connected right. if you tweak it a lil bit..it might work. I JUST came back from burning an F150..and messin with my body kit..the side skirts and while putting them on..i noticed that i could turn my lights of with my door open by moving it around..if you messed with that in the beginning...then that may be the problem..then again...

no door lights either. the only light that comes on is the little light in the gauge cluster that shows that your door is open.

well it's still either of the two, go for the blown bulb theory first..even though I highly doubt it since that rarely happens unless in certain overlaods which also cause catastrophic circuit shorts. so check your bulbs since that's easiest...if its not that, then you have to trace your wires. I had my lights go out before..it was never the bulbs..it was burnt exposed wires grounding somewhere on the car...it happened when I hooked up my led washer fluid nozzles. gotta be extra careful about installing electronic equipment. good luck.
